Road Trip to Winnipeg!

Lifestyle

A few posts back I had hinted about a trip to Canada. DH and I have a goal to visit a foreign country every year. We hadn’t gone anywhere this year and saw the opportunity slipping away especially as in a couple of months I won’t be allowed to go on planes. Canada is somewhere we have wanted to go and that we really felt we ought to go as we live on the same side of the globe. And if we wanted to go to Canada we really had to get a move on it—it gets cold up there! So we decided to make an impromptu trip. Why Winnipeg? It was a straight shot over the border. Here is our adventure!

The other reason for Winnipeg? It is home to one of the Canadian National Mints. Is it nerdy that I really really wanted to go here? Maybe…I love moneys!

They wouldn’t let us take pictures of the actual money making but they did have this awesome 27lb bar of gold that you could hold. That’s about $500,000 that hubby is holding there. Cha-ching!

Next stop, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. Ok, more nerd stuff…while we were visiting they had the Magna Carta at the museum. Again, they wouldn’t let us take pictures of this very old and fragile document but it was very cool to see.

They did let us play dress-up at the end of the exhibit.

The museum had lots of other cool displays about the human fight for rights. Then on the top floor they have a tower that looks out over the city.

Unfortunately we didn’t entirely beat out the bad weather. It rained the whole trip! Nevertheless we got out and saw a few sights.

This is the Basilique-Cathedrale de Saint Boniface. Gorgeous cathedral. I don’t think it shows in the picture but it was actually coming down pretty hard here.

Here is a shot from the inside.

We had some more fun that we didn’t get pictures of. We also went to the Forks Market which is a really cool indoor market, to the Winnipeg Art Museum, and to Fort Gibraltar. There was also a lot that we didn’t get to do. Top things that I’m sad I missed are Assiniboine Park and the Royal Aviation Museum.

On the way back one of our favorite stops was Sioux Falls, SD.

These pictures really don’t do the park justice. It was gorgeous and if you are ever in the area I highly recommend!

Really we had an awesome time. As we did leave on short notice there were a few surprises! First off, we totally didn’t think of this but in Canada they are on the metric system and all the road signs are in kilometers. We were converting the speed from miles to km in our heads for about an hour before we realized that km were listed on our speedometer in smaller numbers below the mph. Face palm moment!

Another surprise was that neither of our phones got any service. Which they were supposed to. They just didn’t. So we were completely lost a large portion of the time without gps. On the plus side we got to practice our map reading skills.

Anyone else taken any fun trips lately? Any surprises? Let me know in the comments below!

Until next time!

This looks like such a fun impromptu trip! I haven’t been on a spur of the moment trip in so long, you inspired me to steal the hubs and go on one! Looks like you had soooo much fun, glad you could get to another country before the year was up (and baby comes!) XO -Kim
